The latest offering from uBiz is the highly anticipated Poster Designer Pro. I got hold of a copy and decided to evaluate its suitablity for the uBiz Enterprise Education print solution.

One of the main things I look for when looking at new software (or hardware) for our Enterprise Education offering is useability. After all, Enterprise Education is about just that, young people learning about business and enterprise. So focus should not be on how to operate a specific software. Instead, it should simple to operate and pick up, without having to wade through door step sized manuals.

It is clear that Serif have put considerable thought into this package. What amazes me is that they have managed to create a package that is not only full of useful features, pre-made templates, and gadgets, but have managed it without making the screen look to cluttered. On a couple of occasions I found myself rooting through menus to try and change the colour of a text box, only to find I was over complicating the task, and could have clicked on the relevant colour in the right hand docker.

Creating a new poster is as easy as choosing a theme, which gives you the look and feel of the poster itself, and then choosing a layout (where text, and images appear for example) PosterDesigner then allows you to make your own customisations in terms of Images and text.

Inserting an image into the pre-defined image areas is just a matter of dragging images from the media bar at the bottom of the window. After that, settings like image size and position within the frame can easily be changed. If you want to get deep down to the nitty gritty of editing your image you can use the in built photo editor, where the theme of ease-of-use combined with a powerful feature set continues.

Editing the text is just a matter of clicking on the "Your text here" which is automatically inserted when you create a poster from one of the templates. And If like me you're expecting two or three half heatedly produced templates, you'd be wrong.

With each template and the associated layouts, there are over 700 different pre-configured posters for you to choose from, all of which are fully customisable in terms of colour and layout. Templates are available for education, business, retail, estate agents and events such as festivals, birthdays, weddings and proms.

Not only are there pre-set styles for documents, for also for text, and other objects. Bevels, shadows, transparency, reflections and glows are all just a click away. Even features such as editing character and line spacing are available. A comprehensive set of clipart (stock images and illustrations) is accessed from the gallery docker, and inserting any of them is just a matter of dragging and dropping it onto the page.

Ive been used to using industry standard products like Adobe's InDesign, and Quark Express.... I can help feeling that for the money, this is what those products should have been.

Existing and New installations of the uBiz Enterprise Education solution will now have the option to upgrade to the uBiz Poster Designer Pro.
